jane south, 2000/2001
there is a jane south opening tomorrow nite at spencer brownstone gallery. i haven’t seen anything by her in at least 5 years. last time was up at mass moca and she was using fluorescent orange and pink paint as a background color for her paper sculptures, which i thought was nice. I really liked her earlier stuff because it was more open and light and delicate. the first time I saw it was at the drawing center in nyc. it was the first time I had seen anyone making intricate paper sculptures, and also the first time i had seen sculpture categorized as ‘drawing’. I thought they were fantastic! i thought the idea was fantastic. the newer constructions seem too desnse and confined. like space stations. wonder what this show will be like. i also wonder if she is ‘stuck’ and continues making them because she must…because i feel like the earlier ones were better, or more sincere. and now they don’t seem so genuine. and then i wonder if i just don’t like it because i don’t, and they aren’t novel to me any longer, so they seem disingenuous? but i don’t think so, because i still think the early ones are beautiful.
