Niagara Falls #5 (Currier & Ives), 2008
oil on canvas
84 x 136 inches
i’ve gone to mike weiss gallery to see this twice now. it’s one of two paintings that i liked in this show. (other one was a bouquet of flowers) the rest were ones of clowns and weird animals that were kind of grotesque and creepy -they were ugly. (i’m guessing intentionally). anyway, this one keeps coming to mind. it is large and the paint is so thick – there is one spot where a highlight in white is squeezed straight out of tube. so thick i doubt it will ever dry. when you stand back you feel like you could slip right into the falls, but when you get up close the globs of paint just turn into giant sweeps of color. the smell of oil paint and fixative is so strong you feel like you’re back in the studio. i really like this one – feels expansive.
