my friend, emily just sent me this youtube video of Clara, who is 91. she teaches you how to cook meals from the depression era. she is such a darling. in this one she’s sharing her recipe of her version of the poorman’s meal, which is why i was sent this video. i have a meal that i always call my “poorman’s meal”. it’s just white rice, beans with a shake of cayenne pepper atop, i slap a fried egg on top of all that, and then once in awhile i fry a plantain to add a little pizazz. i never get sick of this dinner. i could eat rice and beans and my egg all the time! and that’s a fact. i love this video of clara cooking and telling her stories. i especially like when she says “turn on the gas” as she turns the dial on her electric stove. i also love how she says ‘potatoes’ what a gem!
Thanks for sharing this. I think it’s really exciting that we’ll have all this video to look back on of our grandparents. A few weeks ago I spent the day looking through photo books of my boyfriend’s family and realized how nice it would be to have some video of those folks before they died. This month I’m going to my paternal grandparent’s house to record his stories about our family history. Video cameras are so cheap now, everyone should be able to buy or borrow one and get this kind of stuff recorded! You’ll want it later. Trust me.
